Joy to the world, all the boys and girls....

So for all three people who read my blog (Thanks Mom!), I'm putting out a request. I want to compile a list of songs that I need to have, be it because its innovative, unexpected, or just your favorite song. I feel like I'm stuck in a music rut, and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

PS Jeff, don't tell me any Stones songs, I've got most of them.... Thanks luv...

Ok, well, I'm going to put down all the artists I think everyone should listen to (modern stuff only, I figure you know the classics) and then one song by each you should start with. I left off the ones I know you already like.

1) Fastball - Whatever Gets You On
2) The Wallflowers - From The Bottom Of My Heart
3) Alkaline Trio - Mercy Me
4) Barenaked Ladies - Upside Down
5) Belle & Sebastian - Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying
6) Death Cab for Cutie - We Looked Like Giants
7) The Decemberists - July July
8) Dismemberment Plan - Secret Curse
9) (This is my favorite band that no one has heard of, so if you end up liking them expect me to have a heart attack) The Hoodoo Gurus - Always Something
10) Mike Doughty - Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well
11) The Postal Service - Brand New Colony
12) Regina Spektor - Fidelity

Ok, so I went a tad overboard here. Sorry. You should have known better than to ask me for music recommendations! Let me know what you like/dislike, so next time I recommend I will be more informed. :-)

Yo La Tengo - Mr. Tough
Tiger Lou - Oh Horatio
Thom Yorke - Black Swan
Spoon - I Turn my Camera On
Seu Jorge covers of David Bowie songs
Anything by Girl Talk
Anything by Cut Chemist
Phoenix - Too Young
Anything by Gagle
Anything by Nujabes
MSTRKRFT for fun dance music
Anything by Minus the Bear

and uh that's what is off the top of my head. if you want specific genre recommendations or if you like the sound of an artist and want similiar sounding things, let me know. I'm a bit of an audiophile.

oh hey this is holly by the way.

Ok, here are a few songs from my favorite bands (basically the bands I was obsessed with in middle and high school):

Sigur Ros "Staralfur" - while not their best song, it's still great and definitely their most accessable. It's the one I always put on mixes for people who I'm not sure have listened to them before. By the way: best live show ever.

Long Winters "The Commander Thinks Aloud" - God, I love this song. There are two versions of it, both are good though. And, like every other band on this list, they have tons more great stuff too.

Explosions in the Sky "Your Hand in Mine" - this is a Texas band that makes absolutely amazing instrumental music. The lack of vocals and epic sond lengths keep them off the radio but don't let it keep them out of your ipod.

Iron & Wine "Naked As We Came" - Chances are you've heard this song as it's been in a bunch of movies. Doesn't make it any less great though and marks a great entry way into his (it's really just one guy with a rocking beard) amazing catalog.

Spiritualized "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" - This band makes a lot of great music and just came out with a new CD that I need t buy. However, for drug-fueled romance, nothing beats this beautiful tune.
Personal note: I lobbied hard to make this my school's prom song.

Abandoned Pools "Suburband Muse" - I first saw this band opening for Flickerstick years ago. I remember that we were all making fun of the band name on the way there and then, once we arrived, we were absolutely blown away by the fact that they were really fucking good. This was something that really didn't happen with other opening bands at Flickerstick concerts.

Flickerstick "Chloroform the One You Love" - Speaking of Flickerstick. Starting in 8th grade when these guys appeared on (and won) VH1's contest Bands on the Run, my friends and I saw them in concert at least a half dozen times. They're a great band and were really cool guys whenever we talked to them afterwards.

Badly Drawn Boy "A Minor Incident" - This guy's big in England which is why he was tapped to make the soundtrack for the movie version of About a Boy. Strangely enough, that CD is my favorite album of his.

Big Star "I'm In Love With a Girl" - This band is a great band from the 70s. They're the perfect example of a sub-genre I made up called Hanging Out Rock which is basically anything (usually from the 70s) that would fit the soundtrack to a group of friends hanging out in a basement and doing nothing. This is probably why the makers of That 70s Show decided to use a Big Star cover as their theme song.

Bob Dylan "Series of Dreams" - I doubt I have to introduce you to Bob Dylan but, God, do I love this song.

Frightened Rabbit "Old Old Fashioned" - This is a new addition to my favorite band list. Their CD that just came out, Midnight Organ Fight, is amazing. Supposedly the album was written about one of the guy's break ups and the lyrics are all really fucking good. This song's just a lot of fun though.

The National "Show Show" - Great song. Great band. I don't really have any stories here except that I loaned out this CD a few months ago and I really want it back.

Okkervil River "Unless it Kicks" - I'm ashamed to say I only started listening to this band last year when they released their great album The Stage Names (which this is on) but I've been trying to work my way backwards through their discography since.

Polaris "Waiting for October" - If you recognize this song, it's probably because it used to be on Pete and Pete all the time since Polaris was their "house band" playing the theme song and many others that appeared in every episode. Not only is Pete and Pete one of the best children's shows ever (its surreal storylines and characters make it just as fun for adults. Seriously) its soundtrack also makes it a great introduction to some of the best college radio bands of the 90s.

And, to wrap things up, here's a fun song I'm currently obsessed with.
Los Campesinos "You! Me! Dancing!" - tell me that isn't the best song title ever.

Don't know if I've missed the boat on this (a lot of people have already put things I would have said up!), but:

1) Smashing Pumpkins- "Tonight, Tonight;" "Cherub Rock;" "Disarm;" anything from their album Gish

2) anything by Stars. Their voices are amazing

3) the Ditty Bops

4) Tilly and the Wall

5) Tegan and Sara

6)Suicide Machines cover of REM's "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel fine)"

7) the Secret Machines; anything by them rocks, but especially the song "Lightning Blue Eyes"

I would come up with more but I have to go pack for the week in New Brunz... hope you like the recomendations!

and i'm pretty sure you wouldn't be into rap but if you're feeling curious, Mos Def, Immortal Technique

and if you have a bad case of music ADD: get the new Girl Talk album. 40+ minutes of crazy awesome.
